Wave Rock Weekender

15 September 2009 - FILMS PROGRAMME ANNOUNCED

FILMS PROGRAMME ANNOUNCED

Oh yes - it’s WAVE ROCK WEEKENDER time……just a few days away

The only way I can describe how this weekend makes you feel is that scene in Charlie & The Chocolate Factory when Charlie wins the golden ticket.

Seriously! The Wave Rock Weekender REMINDS you what a good time actually is.

It ticks ALL the boxes – incredible music, genuinely adventurous AND awesome AND discerning patrons and artists, the bush, the stars, the big sky, community, quality booze, quality food, fires, comfortable camping, cards, poker, swimming, freedom, the road trip and remembering how good it feels to kick around for a weekend with your friends and people like you with nothing in mind but a good time. All wrapped up in a sweet tiny rural WA community and with the most progressive festival environmental policy in Australia.

We have just released the film programme for the 24 hour cinema (see below) which includes some excellent films such as Wake in Fright, Soul Power, Dogs In Space and the Australian Premiere of Postacrds from Cali – a doco about the making of the new Quantic album in Columbia.
In other good news we are also looking at having a few bikes available this year and maybe some kites, some comedy bits and a telescope.

Film Programme;

Vengo (2000)
The rich and passionate sounds of Spanish flamenco music provide the backdrop for this emotional drama of two families at war. Caco (Antonio Canales) is a man whose family has long been at odds with the Caravacas, a prominent family living in the same village. Mario, Caco's brother, murdered one of the Caravacas, and now the family is out for blood, with Mario's son Diego (Orestes Villasan Rodriguez) the expected target. Caco has lost a daughter of his own, whom Diego loved, and Caco is determined to spare his nephew the same fate. But guarding the young man is no easy task in the hilly country of southern Spain. Vengo features mesmerising performances by a number of noted flamenco performers, including La Paquera de Jerez.

Wake In Fright, 1971
Often spoken about but rarely seen since it was first released in 1971, Wake In Fright is the neglected Australian classic, finally dusted off out of the film archives and rereleased in 2009. Based on Kenneth Cook’s novel of outback terror, Wake In Fright presents a side of Australia rarely seen in cinema even now. John Grant is a bonded teacher stranded in the ‘Yabba, a brutally raw rural town in which the major pastime is drinking to avoid the fly blown heat. The endless bouts of booze and hangovers are broken only by occasional fights, hunting and perhaps some slobbering drunken sex. With no money, no friends, and no way of reaching Sydney, Grant is forced to turn to local drunk Doc Tydon for anything resembling support. Mateship has never been so tense and the expanse of the outback has never been so claustrophobic.

The Man From Hong Kong, 1975
Another lost classic this Australian/Hong Kong Kung fu thriller is a ballet of violence and sex on the blue waters of Sydney Harbour. Featuring a viciously outrageous performance from Jimmy Wang Yu, the film, newly rereleased in widescreen format, showers the audience with a plethora of cinematic effects, beautiful landscapes, and ranges from harrowing realism to ghostly expressionism.

Spirit Stones, 2007
An absorbing documentary that uses Nyoongar storytellers to recount their experiences with falling stones. These stone showers fell repeatedly in the 1940s and 50s across a vast swathe of south-west WA. Spirit Stones uses first person voices to detail these uncanny events. As a documentary about Fortean events Spirit Stones is utterly absorbing, offering a glimpse into a phenomena that remain unexplained.  Filmed with a gentle, poetic calm that lets the numerous storytellers tell their tales in the haunted, evocative landscape, creating their own meanings and drawing their own conclusions.  A rare screening.

Tradition in Transition: Postcard From Cali, 2009
An insight into the music of Will Quantic and his Combo Barbaro and the recording of  their recently released Tradition in Transition album in Cali and Buenaventura in Colombia.  Featuring the talents of Will Quantic, Alfredito Linares, Nidia Gongora, Freddy Colorado, Arthur Verocai, Joao Comanche Gomes and Malcolm Catto.  An Australian premiere.

Soul Power, 2008
Less well known that the legendary 1974 Muhammad Ali vs George Foreman fight popularly known as “The Rumble In The Jungle” is the musical festival that accompanied the event. Designed to showcase African American performers and African stars the three-day event included such greats as James Brown aka “soul brother number one” and BB King and The Spinners alongside the likes of Big Black, the Fania All-Stars, Celia Cruz, and Miriam Makeba.  Punctuating the great archival footage with backstage scenes offering a fantastic insight into a festival packed with groove, sweat and pelvis, Soul Power tells the story of a truly celebratory affirmation of Afrocentric possibility.

The Proposition, 2005
A story of class, race, colonisation, and of one family's violent destiny played out against the searing backdrop of Australian in the 1880s. A formidable international cast (headed by Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone, John Hurt and David Wenham), a unique setting and a powerful story are just some of the reasons why this brutal, brilliant film from writer Nick Cave and director John Hillcoat is a movie masterpiece that you should not miss.

Dogs In Space, 1986
Set against the backdrop of Melbourne’s late ‘70s punk rock scene, Dogs in Space chronicles life in a chaotic, squalid share-house. Hippies, addicts, students and radicals fill their days and nights with sex, drugs, parties and television. Writer/director Richard Lowenstein balances a series of chaotic vignettes with the central story of the romance between housemates Sam (Michael Hutchence), the lead singer of the band, Dogs in Space and his lover Anna (Saskia Post) as it spirals out of control.  Hutchence is a brilliant symbol of reckless youth in this, his first dramatic screen role, giving Dogs in Space instant cult status upon its release.

Ray, 2004
Ray is a musical biographical drama chronicling the life of American legend Ray Charles. Born in a poor town in Georgia, Ray Charles went blind at the age of seven.  Inspired by a fiercely independent mother who insisted he make his own in the world, Charles found his calling and his gift behind a piano keyboard. Touring across the Southern musical circuit, the soulful singer gained a reputation and then exploded with worldwide fame when he pioneered incorporating gospel, country, jazz and orchestral influences into his inimitable style. As he revolutionized the way people appreciated music, he simultaneously fought segregation and championed artists’ rights. Ray provides an unflinching portrait of Charles' musical genius as he overcomes drug addiction while transforming into one America’s most beloved performers.

Love The Beast, 2009
Love the Beast is a 2009 documentary film which explores the affection that Australian actor Eric Bana has for his XB Falcon Coupe. The vehicle was the first car he ever owned, and in 2007 he crashed it during the Targa Tasmania rally.  In his own words he describes the car as a ‘camp fire' around which he and his mates have orbited since the car came into his life.  The film includes guest appearances from Jeremy Clarkson, Jay Leno, Grant Denyer and Jim Richards.

WESTERN AUSTRALIAN SHORT FILMS

Scoff, 2003
A young station cook with a penchant for sweet things quells one appetite by discovering another.

My Nan and the Yandi, 2009
Tells the story of a granddaughter’s love for her grandmother and the important role a humble piece of tin played in her family’s history.

Who Paintin’ Dis Wandjina, 2007
Anonymously a non-Indigenous graffiti artist speaks about the hundreds of Wandjina stencils and graffiti around the city of Perth, Western Australia.  Traditional owners of the sacred Wandjina – an ancient creator spirit – respond to the use of the image.

Layooroo, 2009
A story of friendship, family and our relationship with nature, Layoordoo tells the story of three young boys who travel into a coastal wilderness for a camping trip. Hidden somewhere between the wilderness and their dreams lies a spirit which leads all of them further and further into the bush, until they are forced to face up with their own survival in a strange and startlingly beautiful world.

George and the Ngurrungu, 2009
George Brooking is a Bunaba Elder and knows his Country like the back of his hand, but upon sighting an unusual animal he calls Ngurrungu he asks “what is this animal and where did it come from?”

Tinglewood, 2009
When a family sets up camp deep in the Tinglewood forest, they encounter an unknown force that leads to a violent battle to survive the night.

My Uncle Bluey, 2009
No-one in Britt’s family ever spoke about her uncle, and they hadn’t seen him for thirty years. He was the black sheep of the family, he would argue. He owed everyone money and before he left he actually pulled a gun on Britt’s dad. At least that is what Britt had heard. My Uncle Bluey is a documentary about the things that tear families apart, what brings them back together, and how your family is your family. Always.

Music Men, 2009
David and Daniel were the music men of Port Hedland.  Since they’ve passed on, the family talks about the striking similarities in Daniel and David junior today.

Wrong Way, 2007
This is a story of love – how a couple of young teenagers fell in love, only to discover they couldn’t be together without turning their backs on their Aboriginal families and traditional laws.

Daily Grind, 2009
An office worker decides to test her theory that she has become invisible.
