Artists

It is important to us that we program acts that understand what the Wave Rock Weekender is all about. The bands playing at Wave Rock are often doing so for less money than they would normally earn and are going out of their way to play for us. The reason they come along is because they like the opportunity to play to discerning people in an inspirational location and they support our environmental and artistic vision.  Make sure you let them know how much you appreciate them making the effort......these are artists not pretenders.

Saturday’s line up starts after we open the event with the grand final telecast and is cerebral music played for you and not at you that will help you settle in to the weird and wonderful terrain around the rock. Blues, roots, rock, pop, art-rock, country music and more.    This is no English country garden festival or sports oval event….this is a weekend long experience on the edge of the desert in Western Australia; prehistoric rock formations, eerie salt plains, shiny salmon gums, wildflowers and big, big sky.  Let the music bring it alive.

On Sunday we build up from Saturday’s inspirational artistic base to ramp up into a party to end all parties.   We start nice and easy with soloists to gently tug you in from the surrounding camp areas into what feels like the greatest Sunday  session on earth and roll through soul, blues, roots, dub and reggae to beats, breaks, hip-hop and more.

Making the trek to the Wave Rock Weekender this year will be none other Australian, singer/songwriter MIA DYSON, AMP Award winners THE DRONES, KATALYST, SNOWMAN, C.W. STONEKING, HERMITUDE, ROCCO DELUCA (US), EARTHLINK SOUND SYSTEM, WHITLEY, JESS MCAVOY, LITTLE ORGAN TRIO & DALLAS FRASCA, while returning to the campsite for their second year in a row will be the unmissable SUNSHINE BROTHERS, DAY OF THE DEAD and ABBE MAY, this time with her band THE ROCKIN PNEUMONIA

 Katalyst

Katalyst
Producing since the mid nineties, Sydney based Ashley Anderson initially recorded under the moniker of Moonrock with the late Illpickl. Later moving onto solo projects as Katalyst, he had his first solo release with a track on the internationally respected, "Dope on Plastic" compilation. Jumping forward to August 2007, he is set to release his new album "What’s Happening", a musical excursion through many different styles, brought together with Katalyst’s signature sound. Moving seamlessly through space-aged soul, hip hop, funk and rock, this project is truly diverse.

 Mia Dyson

Mia Dyson
Mia Dyson is on the road. Yeah, we know she's been there since she was 19, but with her third album, Struck Down, she's no longer looking back. It stretches forever in every direction and it is no longer possible to define her by the Australian bush home she left behind.

“She’s a guitarist, songwriter and singer, but it’s her voice - more guttural than just gravelly, more touched than merely smoky - that is the show stopper. Skinny young white girls aren’t supposed to sound this big, soulful and black”

 CW Stoneking

CW Stoneking & His Primitive Horn Orchestra
He plays guitar like a demon, wears natty threads, sings catchy tunes about singing dodo birds, hollers like a 1920’s tent show blues shouter and mutters to himself onstage. Drawing inspiration from influences that include; pre-war blues, hillbilly, old jazz and prison work songs, the idiosyncratic CW STONEKING is a true entertainer who relies on musicianship stagecraft and performance to invoke the spirit of the 1920's Deep South blues.

 The Drones

The Drones
Having spent much of 2005 and 2006 touring the US and Europe in support of their Australian Music Prize-winning album ‘Wait Long By The River And The Bodies Of Your Enemies Will Float By’, The Drones mark their return to Australia with the release of their much-anticipated third album, Gala Mill. Recorded in a mill on an isolated 10,000 acre farm on Tasmania’s east coast, Gala Mill is an album full of extremes - moments of stark, ghostly beauty are set against outbursts of the dark, intense noise for which the band is renowned.

 Snowman

Snowman
After building up a cult following in the first half of the decade, Snowman exploded onto the scene in 2006 with their self-titled debut album. Their sound is original and an exciting change to everything else you’re hearing at the moment. What could be described as strange, beautiful, jagged, swampy, hypnotic, abstract, punk rock, ambient, loud and quiet, still doesn’t encapsulate what is the sound of Snowman. The only way to really understand is to hear them for yourself.

 Sunshine Brothers

Sunshine Brothers
Heavily influenced by staying out late, parties, authentic dub, soul and reggae sounds, SUNSHINE BROTHERS play a hedonistic and unique blend of organic, freestyle live dub/reggae. Very relaxed, very few rules and very hard to ignore when they take to the stage… the Brothers keep it low and slow with an infectious blend of bass drums, piano, trumpet, melodica, guitar, percussion and the occasional vocal. Perfect for the Wave Rock Weekender experience.

 Day of the Dead

Day of the Dead
Day of the Dead is an instrumental 3 piece band formed in 2005. Taking the haunting tremolo sounds of vintage spy movies and the twisted feel of spaghetti western soundtracks, Day of the Dead infuse modern energy into a Franknstein of surf guitar fury. These guys sound straight out of a Tarantino film we are yet to see and play like killers on a mission.

Abbe May

Abbe May & Rockin the Pneumonia
Abbe May from The Fuzz started a blues outfit in early 2006 called The Rockin Pneumonia with local legends Todd Pickett, Pete Stone and K.T Rumble. With a set that includes a charming ukulele solo and plenty of chain gang swagger, the Rockin' Pneumonia have been gigging all over oz to appreciative audiences. If you've ever suffered a broken heart or dropped your scotch before you could taste it, Abbe and the Rockin Pneumonia will remind you to remember to forget what ails ya!

 Whitley

Whitley
Melbourne artist Whitley is a contradiction. The cheeky, charismatic 22-year-old exudes charm with his boyish good looks and quick wit yet his music and lyrics belie an older soul, one with tales to tell. Whitley seamlessly blends organic acoustic flavours with electronic overtones creating songs with hushed, whimsical tales of love and loss. His debut album, The Submarine, derives its name from cult movie about Steve Zissou’s search for marine life that may or may not exist, The Life Aquatic.

Hermitude

Hermitude
Hermitude are highly respected and lauded producers of hip hop breaks and instrumental music, with releases available worldwide and the likes of DJ Krush counted as fans. Their brand new EP is titled The Rare Sightings, written on their 2006 tour to destinations such as Japan, Norway, Spain, England and America. With an upbeat live show and exquisite musicianship, Hermitude deliver an animated and charming performance that is un-missable.

 Jess McAvoy

Jess Mcavoy
10 years in the Australian independent music industry and a history of flirting with musicians from a wide range of genres, Jess McAvoy tends to describe her music as being "Good Music". Often placed in the urban folk genre, Jess' performance style is generally solo armed with an acoustic guitar. Recently performing more often with a drummer and bassist, her passion and skills are highly evident in every performance. Jess Mcavoy’s stage presence is disarmingly honest, and incredibly personable.

Dallas Frasca

Dallas Frasca
Dallas Frasca has an undeniable stage presence. Her powerful and commanding vocal style is one of a kind; raw, gritty and unrestrained, this woman is a force to be reckoned with. At age 19, Dallas started singing in county NSW and now she' has played almost every major festival in Australia and toured nationally with Xavier Rudd. With a wail as big as her dread-locked hair, she is a force for the future.

 Rocco Deluca

Rocco DeLuca
Rocco DeLuca & The Burden are the first signing to the Jude Cole and Kiefer Sutherland owned independent record label, Ironworks Music. With his impressive vocal range and his preference for the Dobro steel guitar, DeLuca brings a new fresh sound intertwined with elements of his Appalachian Folk and Blues influences.

Rolling Stone recently remarked, “The echoes of Neil Young, Robert Plant, Jeff Buckley and Pearl Jam blend into something unique, especially when performed live…the group packs the heat and rocks aggression to work its way into your head and stay there.” The band is currently supporting their debut album, I Trust You To Kill Me.

 Earthlink Sound System

Earthlink Sound System
Earthlink Sound is one of WA's hottest reggae sounds, playing styles from ska, rocksteady, roots and dub to the latest dancehall styles out of Jamaica and beyond. Since 2006 Earthlink have been at the core of the wildly successful FISHERMAN STYLE night at Mojos (North Fremantle), keeping the venue packed out and pumping month after month. Selectas Drummie, Sheriff Lindo, Simmo T, Choppa Crucial and Tatty Reps are accompanied by a range of guests such as MCs Magnus and Papo (Cuba), and singers Cle and Grace Barbe. Not dancing is not an option.

 Little Organ Trio

Little Organ Trio
Don’t miss their ambient jazz stylings packed with plenty of funk and soul.

All artists listed are confirmed, but the program may be subject to change due to cancellation.

The film program presented at Wave Rock Weekender is intended for adults. While most films are rated MA, Wolf Creek has an R18+ rating and may scare some people. You should use your own judgement to determine which films you’ll enjoy.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are warned that the films presented at Wave Rock Weekender may contain images and voices of people who have passed away.

Wave Rock Weekender has a license to screen all films in the program. A couple of the DVDs had to be rented from Planet because the distributor didn’t have copies.
